Are you going to be using the shed for daily activities? If you are, then pick a location that is easy to get to and has good lighting. A storage shed should be located where it will be most needed. Kids (and adults!)are more likely to put outdoor toys and bikes away in the shed if it is close at hand.

If you are building a potting shed, you may want to put the shed right near the garden, in a position where your seedlings can receive a lot of sunlight. A woodshed may need electricity for a chainsaw, although any shed will benefit from having it’s own electrical power. This will provide artificial light so you can use the shed in the evenings and on dark and dreary days.

Will you need a sink, a toilet or shower in your shed? Then you will need a water supply to the shed.

Also consider existing structures and the layout of your property. Are there any trees or foliage in the place you plan to build your own shed? How will the style of shed fit in? Is your shed going to be your secret hideaway or will it be the focal point of your backyard? It’s all your choice.

Also consider the gradient of your shed site. A level site is the the most preferable choice,with a small pitch at the back to allow for drainage. If the site is steep you may be limited on the style and design of shed you can build. With a steep sloping site you may have to choose a post and beam shed plan. A small gradient can often be fixed by using concrete blocks, but this is more suitable for smaller storage sheds.
